MYOFASCIAL CUPPING (sometimes included in a Remedial Massage Session)

Cupping is a technique used in traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for certain health conditions.  Glass or bamboo cups are placed on the skin with suction, which is believed to influence the flow of energy and blood in the body.  In modern times, plastic cups are also used.  Cupping should not be confused with the percussive technique in Swedish Massage called “cupping” or “clapping.”

Cupping was originally called “horn therapy” in ancient China, but variations of it have been used in Turkey, Greece, France, Italy, and Eastern Europe.  Cupping has a long history of use in acupuncture practice and has been combined with bloodletting, but it is a therapy in its own right.  There are specialists cupping practitioners in Japan. The Benefits Cupping is a safe and non-invasive technique.  It is used by practitioners of Chinese medicine to treat colds, lung infections, and problems in the internal organs. It is also used to treat muscle and joint pain and spasms, particularly in the back.

Cupping can be used on people for whom the injection of acupuncture needles poses a problem or risk. Cupping therapy is thought to stimulate blood circulation and penetrate much deeper than conventional massage can do. Cupping strives to balance and improve the flow of qi, or life energy, which travels throughout the body in channels called meridians.  According to traditional Chinese medicine, illness is caused when qi does not move properly in the body. Acupuncturists use cupping for specific problems in the flow of qi. Cupping disperses and moves qi by exerting suction and pressure.  Cupping is used when the qi is blocked at certain points, or when qi needs to be drawn to the surface of the body from deep within.  For instance, cupping is used to treat lung infections and colds, because it is believed that the suction disperses and energizes the qi that has become blocked and stagnated in the lungs.

Cupping is also used by massage therapist in assisting with the release of facia, found at the first layer under the skin.  Facia is the leading cause in tension within a person, particularly in the back.  By using the cups, the therapist is able to use various techniques to loosen the facia, allowing a more productive outcome to the massage being applied.

What to expect during your cupping treatment Patients usually lie down for a cupping treatment. Cups are made of plastic or strong glass.  To create a vacuum, with the plastic cups, they are pumped with a hand pump to create a vacuum making the skin draw up into the cup.   With the glass cups, a flame from a lighter or a burning cotton ball is placed in an upside-down cup.  When the oxygen in the cup is burned off, the cup is placed directly on the skin, where it is held in place by a surprisingly strong suction.  Often, the skin inside the cup visibly rises.  Cupping is generally a painless procedure. Cupping is used, if required, in conjunction with a massage, allowing the Facia, which is the layer directly under the skin, to release, allowing the therapist to more easily access the muscles directly.  The procedure is the same, however, oil is applied to allow the cups to move freely as the therapist moves the cup up and down the back, releasing the tissues. While the therapist works on one side of the body, the other cups are then left on the body whilst the area beneath is being treated and the energy is moved. Generally, the cups are left in place for up to 10 minutes as the skin begins to redden due to the congestion of blood flow.  The therapist will then remove these cups and swap sides of the body.  Once this has occurred, and the tissue is more pliable, all cups will be removed and the massage therapist will be able to continue working on the body.

What to expect after your treatment? After a cupping session, you will notice your skin will come up in red welts or markings.  This discolouration is not caused by broken vessels or tissue trauma, but through the drawing up of waste products to the surface for excretion.  These marks generally will only last between two and seven days. Most often, the effects of the cupping feel the same as after a strong and deep massage.  Occasionally you may feel a little run down while the body is cleaning out the waste products.  To assist in overcoming this, slow down and drink small amounts of water regularly. After your treatment you will see the immediate affects.  You will feel a lot looser and the muscular pain you were feeling will be relieved.  Instead of the deep, intense muscle ache, this will be replaced by a feeling of relaxation.

REIKI (pronounced ray-key) is a lay-on of hands healing technique thousands of years old. It is thought to have originated as a Tibetan Buddhist practise that was rediscovered in the late 1800s by Dr. Mikao Usui, a renowned Japanese Buddhist.

Reiki is a very simple yet powerful Technique.
It is the spiritual consciousness called Reiki that guides the life force called Ki in the practise we call Reiki. Therefor Reiki can be defined as spiritually guided life force energy. This is ore meaningful interpretation of the word Reiki. That Reiki guiding itself with its own wisdom and not being, or needing to be responsive in the direction or thoughts of the practitioner.

The word Reiki comes from two Japanese words – Rei and Ki. Reid is the upper Japanese kanji character on the cover of this manual; Ki is the lower character.
The word Rei as in Reiki mean super knowledge or spiritual consciousness. The consciousness is all knowing and the wisdom to address problems and difficulties in an order and way that is more appropriate, all elements considered.

Ki means the same as Chi in Chinese, Prana in Sanskrit and Mana I’m Hawaiian. Ki is life forces. It is also called the vital force or the universal life force. This non-physical energy exist in all beings. If your life force is low or if there is a restriction in the flow, your body’s immune system will also be low and you will be vulnerable to illness. When it is high and flowing freely the results is a high immune system whereby you are less likely to get sick.
Life Force plays an important role in everything we do. It animates the body and is the primary energy of our emotions, thoughts and spiritual life.

How can REIKI Help Me?
People use Reiki to relax and strengthen their Well-Being; reduce pain, anxiety and fatigue, help manage symptoms, reduce the side effects of medications; and support recovery after injuries and surgery.
Reiki is a good integrative therapy to try because people generally start feeling better very quickly with Reiki. As anxiety and pain lessens, and people feel hopeful about regaining their health, they feel more able to incorporate other needed health interventions or make needed lifestyle changes.
Reiki therapy often clears the mind, enabling patients to better evaluate the sometimes conflicting information being offered by various specialists, so that can make better treatment deceits with greater confidence. In this way, Reiki can help people become more actively involved in their own health.
Reiki has not been found to have any adverse effects. It has no known contraindications and can be used concurrently with any medical intervention.

Crystal healing is an holistic, non-invasive, vibrational energy-based system of healing. That is, it treats the whole person and their integrated energy system. It is therapeutic and deeply relaxing. The technique uses precisely placed crystals either on and/or around the physical body. Crystals may also be laid in precise geometric patterns (grids) within the environment.
Crystals absorb, focus, direct, detoxify, shift and diffuse energy as they interact with the electromagnetic forces and subtle vibrations within the subtle human or environmental energy field. In the context of crystal healing, illness is a dis-ease, the final manifestation of spiritual, environmental, physiological, psychological, emotional, mental, karmic, or ancestral imbalance or distress. Healing means bringing mind, body, spirit and environment back into harmony, restoring the body’s natural rhythm and equilibrium. It does not imply a cure.

What to expect?
A session where crystals are laid on the chakras (energy vortexes linking the physical and subtle energy bodies) to restore balance may last twenty minutes to half an hour. A session where crystals are laid in more complex patterns that deal with underlying causes of dis-ease may last from one to one and a half hours. But in all sessions you can expect to have a chat first – and most probably a history taken – so that the therapist obtains a full picture. (Holistic therapy takes into account lifestyle, emotional, mental and social factors.)
You will then be made comfortable and warm on a healing couch or on the floor. You will be asked to close your eyes and relax. Crystals will be placed on or around your body. The position may be dowsed for with a pendulum or intuited. The crystals will be left in place while you relax and breathe gently. You may feel a tingling sensation, your body may jerk as it releases patterns held in your muscles, you may even laugh or cry as repressed emotions are let go, or you may feel nothing at all except a sense of peace and pleasurable relaxation suffusing your body. The therapist may gently add or remove crystals during the session. When the session is over, the crystals will be removed and you will be encouraged to ground yourself firmly in your body once more.

The benefits occur at different levels. The deep relaxation that is created is an effective antidote to stress, anxiety or depression, and is helpful in maintaining general wellbeing. It can relieve the physical symptoms of stress-related diseases and may well assist with immune disorders and provide pain relief by relaxing muscle tension. It has been shown to be helpful for insomnia, chronic fatigue, raised blood pressure and sleep problems. At an emotional level, crystal healing can stabilise moods and enhance self-esteem. At a mental level, it induces clarity and enhances focus. It is used to transform unwanted behaviours, thought patterns and addictions. At a spiritual level, it creates an acceptance of and harmony with all aspects of being, leading to a more peaceful and centred life.
